Born in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal, professional artist John Baird has been drawing and painting ships and boats since the age of 10.  Inspired by ships that visited the nearby Port of Ballyraine at the head of Lough Swilly, he would later go on to work on coasters and fishing vessels.  His understanding of ships and the sea is evident in the level of detail included in his drawings.

The work of John Baird has featured in numerous publications, books and exhibitions. His drawings have become much sought after by ship enthusiasts. In 2002 he published 'The Port', a short illustrated history
of Port Ballyraine, Letterkeny.
